Robin Upton has been designing an Internet Gift Economy since 2004, developing a decentralised economic system called Altruistic Economics. This represents trust in the form of individuals' unilateral declaration of sympathy in the form of their readiness to forego gain to prevent a friend's loss. Trust in this system is linked not only to particular people but also resources (I trust X with my time, but Y with my money).

He has rejected WWW as a medium which is too centralised, in favour of his own, more decentralised system of XML data exchange, Friend2Friend.
