You should use <ref></ref> around the template text if you want your reference to be placed at the end of the page.
REALLY IMPORTANT! In order to not have to type by hands the template text you can use the Wikipedia citation assistant which will let you search a paper in Google Scholar and then click on {{wikify}} and get the correct template text to be placed into a wiki page. Thanks to Verisimilus for creating such a useful tool!!
